Portraits is Penhaligon’s latest collection of fragrances, which tells the tale of a fictional aristocratic family that thrives on drama and scandal. Set in the Victorian era to play on the heritage of the brand, the tongue-in-cheek branding is matched with twists on classic fragrances.
We were tasked with developing a story and wording for an “Instagram adventure” for the collection, leading you on a ‘choose your own’ story that ultimately describes your fragrance taste.
The adventure works by directing people to click the middle image of an Instagram profile mosaic, which is tagged with 2 further profiles to represent your decisions. After a few decisions, your identity is revealed as a member of the Portraits family.
The story required a method to determine gender of the customer, and simple tests of fragrance preferences that would also match the existing storylines of the Portraits collection. A fun challenge that involved us re-watching Clue! and some popular period drama for inspiration.
